Prevent Roof Rot with These 6 Tips

Roof rot can create serious structural integrity problems. When dry rot begins to eat away at a rooftop, the wooden supports and materials become weak and crumbly. Left untreated, the roof can leak or even collapse. Plus, rotting leads to mold growth, which can threaten the health of your family.

Prevent Roof Rot with These 6 Tips

To prevent roof rot, you’ll need to take proper care of your home and rooftop. What should you do?

No. 1: Schedule Regular Roof Inspections

Have a professional roofer come out and inspect your roof at least once per year — twice is better. Regular roof inspections can identify and resolve issues that could lead to rotting, so that roof rot can’t take hold.

No. 2: Install an Effective Roof Ventilation System

Your attic needs to be properly vented so that the air flows freely and moisture can escape. To prevent roof rot, make sure that you have an effective ventilation system, with sufficient ridge vents, soffit vents and attic fans.

No. 3: Keep the Gutters Clear

Excessive rooftop moisture can cause rotting — and clogged gutters can trap water right at the roof’s edge. Clear your gutters and downspouts regularly to help ward off roof rot. You might also want to have gutter guards installed to keep your gutters clog-free.

No. 4: Remove Debris Immediately

Leaves, tree branches and other debris can block rainwater and melting snow from flowing off the roof. Standing water is more likely to cause rot, so make sure to remove any debris from your rooftop as soon as possible.

No. 5: Replace Missing or Damaged Shingles Promptly

Cracked or loose shingles can compromise your roof and leave it at risk for rotting. Replace any missing or damaged roof shingles as you notice them to prevent rooftop rot from becoming a problem.

No. 6: Pay Attention to Attic Temperature

The temperature in your attic needs to remain moderate all year long to help prevent moisture from building up. To keep the level consistent and prevent roof rot, you may need to install a fan, heater or air conditioner. For some attics, a dehumidifier can also be helpful.
